The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83362 (MS15-045: Vulnerability in Windows Journal Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3046002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91054 (Microsoft Windows Journal Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS15-045)).

Applying the patch MS15-045 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19829.
