QEMU Floppy Disk Controller memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in QEMU (Virtualization Software) (unknown version). Affected is an unknown code block of the component Floppy Disk Controller. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The Floppy Disk Controller (FDC) in QEMU, as used in Xen 4.5.x and earlier and KVM, allows local guest users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write and guest crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via the (1) FD_CMD_READ_ID, (2) FD_CMD_DRIVE_SPECIFICATION_COMMAND, or other unspecified commands, aka VENOM.

The weakness was disclosed 05/13/2015 with CrowdStrike as Bug 1218611 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-3456 since 04/29/2015. Local access is required to approach this attack. The requirement for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Marcus Meissner and been published 5 days after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83484 (OracleVM 2.2 : xen (OVMSA-2015-0059) (Venom)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family OracleVM Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175401 (Debian Security Update for qemu (DSA 3259-1)).

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (103116), Tenable (83484) and Exploit-DB (37053).
