Apple Watch OS 1.0 Kernel privileges management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Apple Watch OS 1.0 (Smartwatch Operating System). It has been declared as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component Kernel. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The kernel in Apple iOS before 8.3, Apple OS X before 10.10.3, and Apple TV before 7.2 allows attackers to execute arbitrary code in a privileged context or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted app.

The weakness was presented 05/19/2015 by Ilja van Sprundel (lokihardt@ASRT) with Zimperium Mobile Security Labs as HT204870 as confirmed advisory (Website) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1101 since 01/16/2015. The exploitation appears to be difficult. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1068 according to MITRE ATT&CK.

A public exploit has been developed in ANSI C. It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 82712 (Apple TV < 7.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123515 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.3 and Security Update 2015-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-04-08-2)).

Upgrading to version 1.0.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (82712), SecurityFocus (BID 73981†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52911†). Additional details are provided at scip.ch.
