Oracle Java up to 7 Update 11 JMX Applet cross site scripting

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Oracle Java up to 7 Update 11 (Programming Language Software). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component JMX. The manipulation as part of a Applet leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) component in Oracle Java SE 7 through Update 11, and OpenJDK 7, allows user-assisted remote attackers to bypass the Java security sandbox via unspecified vectors related to JMX, aka "Issue 52," a different vulnerability than CVE-2013-1490.

The weakness was shared 02/01/2013 by Vitaliy Toropov (Aniway.Anyway) with Sun Microsystems Inc. as Java CPU Feb 2013 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at oracle.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-0431 since 12/07/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69715 (Amazon Linux AMI : java-1.7.0-openjdk (ALAS-2013-156)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 185017 (HP-UX Running Java Multiple Vulnerabilities (HPSBUX02857)). This issue was added on 05/25/2022 to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities Catalog with a due date of 06/15/2022:

Apply updates per vendor instructions.

Upgrading to version Java SE 7 Update 13, eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13147.
