Linux Kernel up to 3.14.4 Netfilter Subsystem nf_conntrack_extend.h null pointer dereference

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.14.4 (Operating System) and classified as problematic. This issue affects an unknown code of the file include/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_extend.h of the component Netfilter Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:

include/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_extend.h in the netfilter subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.14.5 uses an insufficiently large data type for certain extension data, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) via outbound network traffic that triggers extension loading, as demonstrated by configuring a PPTP tunnel in a NAT environment.

The weakness was shared 05/27/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-9715 since 04/08/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83758 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is . The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 155293 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2015-3066)).

Upgrading to version 3.14.5 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (83758). The entries 73983 and 74643 are related to this item.
