The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a null pointer dereference vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-476. A NULL pointer dereference occurs when the application dereferences a pointer that it expects to be valid, but is NULL, typically causing a crash or exit. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
include/net/netfilter/nf_conntrack_extend.h in the netfilter subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.14.5 uses an insufficiently large data type for certain extension data, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and OOPS) via outbound network traffic that triggers extension loading, as demonstrated by configuring a PPTP tunnel in a NAT environment.
The weakness was shared 05/27/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2014-9715 since 04/08/2015. An attack has to be approached locally.
