A vulnerability was found in Novell GroupWise Client up to 2012.0 SP1 (Groupware Software). It has been rated as critical. The client in Novell GroupWise 8.0 before 8.0.3 HP2 and 2012 before SP1 HP1 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (incorrect pointer dereference) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 01/30/2013 with HTBridge as 7011687 as confirmed bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at novell.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-0804 since 01/05/2013. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.
After 3 months, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is available at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64471 (Novell GroupWise Client 8.x < 8.0.3 Hot Patch 2 / 2012.x < 2012 SP1 Hot Patch 1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows.
Upgrading to version 8.0.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2012 SP1 HP1 is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13029.
