Novell ZENworks Configuration Management up to 10.x/11.3.1 UploadServlet filename path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Novell ZENworks Configuration Management up to 10.x/11.3.1 (Policy Management Software). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component UploadServlet. The manipulation of the argument filename as part of a WAR File leads to a path traversal vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-22. The software uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the software does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The weakness was shared 06/07/2015 by Pedro Ribeiro (Website). The advisory is shared for download at This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-0779 since 01/07/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

A public exploit has been developed by Metasploit in Ruby and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is declared as highly functional. It is possible to download the exploit at As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83289 (Novell ZENworks Configuration Management < 11.3.2 Remote Code Execution (intrusive check)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CGI abuses.

Upgrading to version 11.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19805.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Vulnerability Center (SBV-50659), Tenable (83289) and Exploit-DB (36964).
