A vulnerability has been found in D-Link DIR-300 and DIR-600 2.13/2.14b01 (Router Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown functionality of the file version.txt. The manipulation of the argument SSID
with an unknown input leads to a cross site scripting vulnerability (Stored). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-80. The product receives input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special characters such as "<", ">", and "&" that could be interpreted as web-scripting elements when they are sent to a downstream component that processes web pages. As an impact it is known to affect integrity.
The bug was discovered 12/14/2012. The weakness was disclosed 02/04/2013 by Michael Messner (m1k3) with s3cur1ty as m1adv2013-003 as not defined posting (Website). The advisory is available at s3cur1ty.de. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1059.007 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.
A public exploit has been developed by m-1-k-3 and been published immediately after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 52 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:version.txt it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
Upgrading to version Firmware 2.14b01 or 2.15b01 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (24453). The entries 7579, 7580, 7581 and 7583 are pretty similar.
