A vulnerability was found in VMware Workstation, Player and Fusion on Windows (Virtualization Software) and classified as critical. This issue affects an unknown code in the library TPView.ddl. The weakness was released 06/09/2015 by Kostya Kortchinsky with Google Security Team as VMSA-2015-0004 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at vmware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-2336 since 03/18/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84150 (VMware Horizon View Client 3.2.x < 3.2.1 / 3.3.x < 3.4.0 / or 5.x < 5.4.2 Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2015-0004)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115234 (VMware Workstation,Player,Horizon Client and Fusion Security Update (VMSA-2015-0004)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
