VMware Workstation/Player/Fusion on 64-bit RPC Command input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in VMware Workstation, Player and Fusion on 64-bit (Virtualization Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component RPC Command Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

VMware Workstation 10.x before 10.0.5, VMware Player 6.x before 6.0.6, and VMware Fusion 6.x before 6.0.6 and 7.x before 7.0.1 allow attackers to cause a denial of service against a 32-bit guest OS or 64-bit host OS via a crafted RPC command.

The weakness was published 06/09/2015 by Peter Kamensky (DiGiT) with Digital Security as VMSA-2015-0004 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at vmware.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2341 since 03/18/2015. An attack has to be approached locally. The successful exploitation needs a authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84218 (VMware Fusion 6.x < 6.0.6 / 7.x < 7.0.1 RPC Command DoS), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115234 (VMware Workstation,Player,Horizon Client and Fusion Security Update (VMSA-2015-0004)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (103737) and Tenable (84218). Similar entries are available at 4555, 75818, 75819 and 75820.
