Multiple integer overflows in the search_chunk function in chmd.c in libmspack before 0.5 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted CHM file.
The weakness was disclosed 06/11/2015 by Jakub Wilk as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-4468 since 06/10/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87858 (SUSE SLED12 / SLES12 Security Update : libmspack (SUSE-SU-2016:0011-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168364 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for libmspack (SUSE-SU-2016:0011-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 8 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
