hostapd/wpa_supplicant WMM Action Frame Parser memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic has been found in hostapd and wpa_supplicant (affected version unknown). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component WMM Action Frame Parser. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Integer underflow in the WMM Action frame parser in hostapd 0.5.5 through 2.4 and wpa_supplicant 0.7.0 through 2.4, when used for AP mode MLME/SME functionality, allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) via a crafted frame, which triggers an out-of-bounds read.

The weakness was presented 06/15/2015 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at openwall.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-4142 since 05/31/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84198 (CentOS 7 : wpa_supplicant (CESA-2015:1090)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169165 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for wpa_supplicant (SUSE-SU-2016:2305-1)).

There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (84198). See 75887, 75889, 75890 and 75891 for similar entries.
