Citrix Xen up to 4.2.1 AMD IOMMU denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. The summary by CVE is:

The AMD IOMMU support in Xen 4.2.x, 4.1.x, 3.3, and other versions, when using AMD-Vi for PCI passthrough, uses the same interrupt remapping table for the host and all guests, which allows guests to cause a denial of service by injecting an interrupt into other guests.

The weakness was shared 02/05/2013 as confirmed mailinglist post (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-0153 since 12/06/2012. The exploitability is told to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 68826 (Oracle Linux 5 : kernel (ELSA-2013-0847)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370047 (Citrix XenServer Security Update (CTX136540)).

Upgrading to version 4.1.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (81831) and Tenable (68826). The entries 7602, 7603, 7604 and 7605 are related to this item.
