A vulnerability has been found in PHP 5.4.41/5.5.25/5.6.9 (Programming Language Software) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function unserialize
of the component SOAP Extension. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a type confusion vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-843. The product allocates or initializes a resource such as a pointer, object, or variable using one type, but it later accesses that resource using a type that is incompatible with the original type. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and availability.
The weakness was released 06/26/2015 as Bug 1222538 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-4601 since 06/16/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84659 (Oracle Linux 6 : php (ELSA-2015-1218)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196160 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Php5 Vulnerabilities (USN-2658-1)).
Upgrading to version 5.4.42, 5.6.10 or 5.5.26 eliminates this vulnerability.
