Heap-based buffer overflow in the DecodeImage function in libwmf 0.2.8.4 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted "run-length count" in an image in a WMF file.
The weakness was disclosed 07/01/2015 by Stefan Cornelius (Website). The advisory is shared at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-4588 since 06/15/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84384 (openSUSE Security Update : libwmf (openSUSE-2015-443)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 350098 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for libwmf: ALAS-2015-604).
