A vulnerability was found in Apple Mac OS X up to 10.10.3 (Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function printf
of the component SQLite. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Multiple buffer overflows in the printf functionality in SQLite, as used in Apple iOS before 8.4 and OS X before 10.10.4, allow remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (application crash) via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was presented 07/03/2015 by Peter Rutenbar with Zero Day Initiative (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at lists.apple.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-3717 since 05/07/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84488 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (GHOST) (Logjam)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370347 (Apple iTunes Prior to 12.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (APPLE-SA-2017-03-22-1) and (APPLE-SA-2017-03-22-2)).
Upgrading to version 10.10.4 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 19789.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84488), SecurityFocus (BID 75491†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-50917†). See VDB-50128, VDB-61176, VDB-61175 and VDB-75568 for similar entries.
