A vulnerability has been found in FFmpeg up to 1.1.1 (Multimedia Processing Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this vulnerability is the function generate_joint_tables of the file libavcodec/huffyuvdec.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. libavcodec/huffyuvdec.c in FFmpeg before 1.1.2 allows remote attackers to have an unspecified impact via crafted Huffyuv data, related to an out-of-bounds write and (1) unchecked return codes from the init_vlc function and (2) "len==0 cases."

The weakness was disclosed 02/06/2013 by Mateusz Jurczyk and Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) with Google Security Team as 52093 as confirmed advisory (Secunia). It is possible to read the advisory at secunia.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the project team. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-0868 since 01/07/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 77122 (Debian DSA-3003-1 : libav - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 1.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at git.videolan.org. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
