Mozilla Network Security Services up to 3.19.0 ECC cryptographic issues

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical was found in Mozilla Network Security Services up to 3.19.0 (Web Browser). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the component ECC Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a cryptographic issues vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-310. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

Mozilla Network Security Services (NSS) before 3.19.1, as used in Mozilla Firefox before 39.0, Firefox ESR 31.x before 31.8 and 38.x before 38.1, and other products, does not properly perform Elliptical Curve Cryptography (ECC) multiplications, which makes it easier for remote attackers to spoof ECDSA signatures via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was published 07/06/2015 by Karthikeyan Bhargavan (Paul) with Mozilla Developers (Website). The advisory is shared at developer.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-2730 since 03/25/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1600 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84575 (Firefox ESR < 31.8 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Mac OS X) (Logjam)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196175 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Nss Vulnerabilities (USN-2672-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.19.1 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (104386) and Tenable (84575). Similar entries are available at 76277, 76278, 76279 and 76280.
