The weakness was presented 07/08/2015 by João Silva and Ross Brunton as Security releases issued: 1.8.3, 1.7.9, 1.4.21 as confirmed news (Website). The advisory is available at djangoproject.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-5145 since 06/29/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The advisory points out:

django.core.validators.URLValidator included a regular expression that was extremely slow to evaluate against certain inputs.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84652 (FreeBSD : django -- multiple vulnerabilities (37ed8e9c-2651-11e5-86ff-14dae9d210b8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124032 (Fedora Security Update for python-django (FEDORA-2015-11403)).

Upgrading to version 1.4.21, 1.7.9 or 1.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The news contains the following remark:
