The weakness was disclosed 02/12/2013 by Dmitriy Pletnev with Secunia Research as MS13-012 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2013-0418 since 12/07/2012. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. The structure of the vulnerability defines a possible price range of USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/04/2021).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64573 (MS13-012: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Exchange Server Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2809279)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 74264 (Microsoft Exchange Server Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-012)).

Applying the patch KB2809279 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 12964.
