A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2/Server 2012 (Operating System). This issue affects some unknown processing of the component NFS Server. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. The NFS server in Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 and R2 SP1 and Server 2012 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (NULL pointer dereference and reboot) via an attempted renaming of a file or folder located on a read-only share, aka "NULL Dereference Vulnerability."
The weakness was presented 02/12/2013 as MS13-014 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Microsoft. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-1281 since 01/12/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64575 (MS13-014: Vulnerability in NFS Server Could Allow Denial of Service (2790978)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90861 (Microsoft NFS Server Denial of Service Vulnerability (MS13-014)).
Applying the patch KB2790978 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13304.
