The ucnv_io_getConverterName function in common/ucnv_io.cpp in International Components for Unicode (ICU), as used in Google Chrome before 44.0.2403.89, mishandles converter names with initial x- substrings, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (read of uninitialized memory) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted file.

The weakness was released 07/21/2015 by Chamal De Silva (Cloudfuzzer) with Baidu X-Team as Stable Channel Update, July 2015 as confirmed release notes (Blog). It is possible to read the advisory at googlechromereleases.blogspot.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-1270 since 01/21/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84992 (Debian DSA-3315-1 : chromium-browser - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124232 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 2.4.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 44.0.2403.89 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at chrome.google.com. A possible mitigation has been published 2 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
