Ruby on Rails up to 3.x/4.x Web Console request.rb X-Forwarded-For Blacklist access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Ruby on Rails up to 3.x/4.x (Programming Language Software). It has been classified as critical. Affected is an unknown functionality of the file request.rb of the component Web Console. The manipulation of the argument X-Forwarded-For with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability (Blacklist). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-284. The product does not restrict or incorrectly restricts access to a resource from an unauthorized actor. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

request.rb in Web Console before 2.1.3, as used with Ruby on Rails 3.x and 4.x, does not properly restrict the use of X-Forwarded-For headers in determining a client's IP address, which allows remote attackers to bypass the whitelisted_ips protection mechanism via a crafted request.

The weakness was disclosed 07/26/2015 by Aaron (Website). The advisory is shared for download at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-3224 since 04/10/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.

It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 84255 (FreeBSD : rubygem-rails -- multiple vulnerabilities (eb8a8978-8dd5-49ce-87f4-49667b2166dd)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks.

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 39139.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (84255), SecurityFocus (BID 75237†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-51630†). The entries VDB-76806, VDB-76813, VDB-76814 and VDB-76815 are pretty similar.
