Google Android up to 5.0 dhcpd dhcp-common.c snprintf memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Google Android up to 5.0 (Smartphone Operating System). It has been classified as critical. This affects the function snprintf of the file dhcp-common.c of the component dhcpd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The print_option function in dhcp-common.c in dhcpcd through 6.9.1, as used in dhcp.c in dhcpcd 5.x in Android before 5.1 and other products, misinterprets the return value of the snprintf function, which allows remote DHCP servers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted message.

The weakness was shared 03/12/2015 by Jüri Aedla as ZDI-15-093 as confirmed advisory (ZDI). It is possible to read the advisory at zerodayinitiative.com. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-7913 since 10/06/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/07/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91489 (Debian DLA-506-1 : dhcpcd5 security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks.

Upgrading to version 5.1 eliminates this vulnerability. The upgrade is hosted for download at android.googlesource.com. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (91489), SecurityFocus (BID 76100†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52277†). The entry VDB-76838 is related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
