CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Todd Miller sudo 1.8.14 (Operating System Utility Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the file /etc/sudoers of the component sudoedit. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

sudoedit in Sudo before 1.8.15 allows local users to gain privileges via a symlink attack on a file whose full path is defined using multiple wildcards in /etc/sudoers, as demonstrated by "/home/*/*/file.txt."

The weakness was shared 07/28/2015 by Daniel Svartman as confirmed exploit (Exploit-DB). The advisory is available at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5602 since 07/20/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. Local access is required to approach this attack. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project. The advisory points out:

It seems that sudoedit does not check the full path if a wildcard is used twice (e.g. /home/*/*/file.txt), allowing a malicious user to replace the file.txt real file with a symbolic link to a different location (e.g. /etc/shadow). I was able to perform such redirect and retrieve the data from the /etc/shadow file.

A public exploit has been developed by Daniel Svartman and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87826 (Debian DLA-382-1 : sudo security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124883 (Oracle Solaris 10 Multiple Vulnerabilities (Third Party Bulletin - April 2016)). The code used by the exploit is:

<user_to_grant_priv> ALL=(root) NOPASSWD: sudoedit /home/*/*/test.txt

Upgrading to version 1.8.15 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (105240), Exploit-DB (37710), Tenable (87826) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-54492†). The entries VDB-81143, VDB-82305, VDB-83259 and VDB-89776 are related to this item.
