XenSource Xen 4.2/4.3/4.4/4.5 RTL8139 Device information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in XenSource Xen 4.2/4.3/4.4/4.5 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown code block of the component RTL8139 Device Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The C+ mode offload emulation in the RTL8139 network card device model in QEMU, as used in Xen 4.5.x and earlier, allows remote attackers to read process heap memory via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was shared 08/03/2015 by Donghai Zhu as XSA-140 as confirmed security advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at xenbits.xen.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5165 since 07/01/2015. Attacking locally is a requirement. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:

The QEMU model of the RTL8139 network card did not sufficiently validate inputs in the C+ mode offload emulation. This results in uninitialised memory from the QEMU process's heap being leaked to the domain as well as to the network.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85480 (Fedora 22 : qemu-2.3.1-1.fc22 (2015-13402)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168231 (OpenSuSE Security Update for xen (openSUSE-SU-2015:2003-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (85480), SecurityFocus (BID 76153†), SecurityTracker (ID 1033176†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-51730†). The entries VDB-76323, VDB-76878 and VDB-77069 are related to this item.
