Cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in wp-includes/wp-db.php in WordPress before 4.2.1 allows remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a long comment that is improperly stored because of limitations on the MySQL TEXT data type.

The weakness was published 08/03/2015 by Jouko Pynnonen (Website). The advisory is shared at wordpress.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-3440 since 04/28/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details and also a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

A public exploit has been developed by klikki and been published even before and not after the advisory. It is possible to download the exploit at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 98 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. By approaching the search of inurl:wp-includes/wp-db.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83918 (Debian DLA-236-1 : wordpress security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 115192 (Fedora Security Update for wordpress (FEDORA-2015-7725)).

Upgrading to version 4.2.1 eliminates this vulnerability.
