Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in WordPress before 4.1.2, when MySQL is used without strict mode, allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via a (1) four-byte UTF-8 character or (2) invalid character that reaches the database layer, as demonstrated by a crafted character in a comment.

The weakness was shared 08/05/2015 by Michael Kapfer (Basti) (Website). The advisory is shared for download at wordpress.org. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-3438 since 04/28/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 83918 (Debian DLA-236-1 : wordpress security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11505 (WordPress Prior to 4.1.2 Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).

Upgrading to version 4.1.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20147.
