A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Microsoft Windows up to Vista (Operating System). Affected is an unknown functionality of the component TrueType Font Parser. The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2015 by Mateusz Jurczyk with Google Project Zero as MS15-080 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2455 since 03/19/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85347 (Microsoft Silverlight < 5.1.40728.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities (MS15-080) (Mac OS X)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91085 (Microsoft Graphics Component Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS15-080)).
Applying the patch MS15-080 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20351.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (85347). The entries 77015, 77016, 77017 and 77018 are pretty similar.
