The weakness was released 08/11/2015 by Steven Vittitoe with Google Project Zero as MS15-081 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is available at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-2467 since 03/19/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85350 (MS15-081: Vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office Could Allow Remote Code Execution (3080790)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110258 (Microsoft Office Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-081)).
Applying the patch MS15-081 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 20306.
