An issue existed in caching of HTTP authentication. Credentials entered in private browsing mode were carried over to regular browsing which would reveal parts of the user's private browsing history.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85408 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168651 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Security webkit2gtk3 (openSUSE-SU-2016:0761-1)).

Upgrading to version 6.2.8, 7.1.8 or 8.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This issue was addressed through improved caching restrictions.
