This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component WebKit Process Model. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a 7pk security vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-254. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

WebKit in Apple Safari before 6.2.8, 7.x before 7.1.8, and 8.x before 8.0.8, as used in iOS before 8.4.1 and other products, allows remote attackers to spoof the user interface via a malformed URL.

The weakness was presented 08/11/2015 by xisigr with Tencent as HT205033 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-3755 since 05/07/2015. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1211. The advisory points out:

Navigating to a malformed URL may have allowed a malicious website to display an arbitrary URL.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85408 (Mac OS X 10.10.x < 10.10.5 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168651 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Security webkit2gtk3 (openSUSE-SU-2016:0761-1)).

Upgrading to version 6.2.8, 7.1.8 or 8.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The advisory contains the following remark:

This issue was addressed through improved URL handling.
