A vulnerability has been found in Apple iOS up to 8.4.0 (Smartphone Operating System) and classified as problematic. This vulnerability affects an unknown code block of the component IOHIDFamily. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
Buffer overflow in IOHIDFamily in Apple iOS before 8.4.1 and OS X before 10.10.5 allows local users to gain privileges via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 08/11/2015 by Ilja van Sprundel with Google Project Zero as HT205030 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at support.apple.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2015-5774 since 08/06/2015. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 90315 (Apple TV < 7.2.1 Multiple Vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Misc.. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 123806 (Apple Mac OS X v10.10.5 and Security Update 2015-006 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-08-13-2)).
Upgrading to version 8.4.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
