Check Point VPN-1/Firewall-1 ASN.1 Decoder heap-based overflow

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Check Point VPN-1 and Firewall-1 (Firewall Software) (affected version not known). It has been declared as critical. This vulnerability affects some unknown functionality of the component ASN.1 Decoder. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a heap-based overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-122. A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc(). As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Heap-based buffer overflow in ASN.1 decoding library in Check Point VPN-1 products, when Aggressive Mode IKE is implemented, allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by initiating an IKE negotiation and then sending an IKE packet with malformed ASN.1 data.

The bug was discovered 07/28/2004. The weakness was disclosed 07/28/2004 by Mark Dowd and Neel Mehta (ERNE) with ISS X-Force (Website). The advisory is shared for download at checkpoint.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2004-0699 since 07/15/2004. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 12084 (Check Point FireWall-1 4.x Multiple Vulnerabilities (OF, FS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Firewalls and running in the context r.

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at checkpoint.com. Attack attempts may be identified with Snort ID 15979.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (16824) and Tenable (12084). Additional details are provided at checkpoint.com. The entry 505 is pretty similar.
