Elasticsearch up to 1.6.0 API Call path traversal

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Elasticsearch up to 1.6.0. It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component API Call Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. CVE summarizes:

Directory traversal vulnerability in Elasticsearch before 1.6.1 allows remote attackers to read arbitrary files via unspecified vectors related to snapshot API calls.

The weakness was shared 08/17/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at elastic.co. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-5531 since 07/16/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1006.

A public exploit has been developed by Pedro Andujar and been published 2 months after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85245 (FreeBSD : elasticsearch -- directory traversal attack via snapshot API (ae8c09cb-32da-11e5-a4a5-002590263bf5)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11583 (Elasticsearch Snapshot API Directory Traversal Vulnerability).

Upgrading to version 1.6.1 eliminates this vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 29745.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (38383), Tenable (85245), SecurityFocus (BID 75935†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52323†).
