Linux Kernel vhost Driver VHOST_SET_LOG_FD Kernel Memory resource management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System) (affected version unknown) and classified as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown functionality of the component vhost Driver. The manipulation of the argument VHOST_SET_LOG_FD as part of a IOCTL Command leads to a resource management vulnerability (Kernel Memory). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-399. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

The vhost_dev_ioctl function in drivers/vhost/vhost.c in the Linux kernel before 4.1.5 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a VHOST_SET_LOG_FD ioctl call that triggers permanent file-descriptor allocation.

The weakness was presented 08/17/2015 by Michael S. Tsirkin with Red Hat as Bug 1251839 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). It is possible to read the advisory at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-6252 since 08/17/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation needs a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86050 (Debian DSA-3364-1 : linux - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 169069 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2016:2074-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (105694), Tenable (86050), SecurityFocus (BID 76400†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57263†). Additional details are provided at seclists.org.
