Wireshark up to 1.12.6 epan/packet.c input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Wireshark up to 1.12.6 (Packet Analyzer Software). Affected by this issue is the function dissector_get_string_handle/dissector_get_default_string_handle of the file epan/packet.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

The dissector-table implementation in epan/packet.c in Wireshark 1.12.x before 1.12.7 mishandles table searches for empty strings, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (application crash) via a crafted packet, related to the (1) dissector_get_string_handle and (2) dissector_get_default_string_handle functions.

The weakness was published 08/24/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at code.wireshark.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-6243 since 08/14/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86156 (Debian DSA-3367-1 : wireshark - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 124189 (Solaris 11.3 Support Repository Update (SRU) 1.5.0 Missing).

Upgrading to version 1.12.7 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86156), SecurityFocus (BID 76384†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-52312†). Similar entries are available at VDB-76766, VDB-76767, VDB-77418 and VDB-77419.
