FFmpeg up to 2.7.1 libavcodec/mpegvideo.c ff_mpv_common_init input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 2.7.1 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been classified as problematic. Affected is the function ff_mpv_common_init of the file libavcodec/mpegvideo.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

The ff_mpv_common_init function in libavcodec/mpegvideo.c in FFmpeg before 2.7.2 does not properly maintain the encoding context, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (invalid pointer access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted MPEG data.

The weakness was released 09/06/2015 (Website). The advisory is available at git.videolan.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-6821 since 09/05/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86044 (FreeBSD : ffmpeg -- multiple vulnerabilities (3d950687-b4c9-4a86-8478-c56743547af8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176784 (Debian Security Update for libav (DLA 1611-1)).

Upgrading to version 2.7.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86044), SecurityFocus (BID 77073†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-53323†). Entries connected to this vulnerability are available at VDB-73166, VDB-77583, VDB-77584 and VDB-77585.
