Mozilla Firefox up to 18.0.2 NextCluster memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 18.0.2 (Web Browser) and classified as critical. This issue affects the function ClusterIterator::NextCluster. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

The ClusterIterator::NextCluster function in Mozilla Firefox before 19.0, Thunderbird before 17.0.3, and SeaMonkey before 2.16 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read) via unspecified vectors.

The weakness was presented 02/19/2013 by Abhishek Arya (Inferno) with Google Chrome Security Team as MFSA 2013-28 as confirmed advisory (Mozilla Blog). It is possible to read the advisory at mozilla.org. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Mozilla. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-0778 since 01/02/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details as well as a private exploit are known. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 05/05/2021).

It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70183 (GLSA-201309-23 : Mozilla Products: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166191 (SUSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox 19 (openSUSE-SU-2013:0323-1)).

Upgrading to version 19.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (70183), SecurityFocus (BID 58030†), OSVDB (90420†), Secunia (SA52240†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1028162†).
