The weakness was disclosed 09/08/2015 with Microsoft as MS15-097 as confirmed bulletin (Technet). The advisory is shared at technet.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2531 since 03/19/2015. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85849 (MS15-104: Vulnerabilities in Skype for Business Server and Lync Server Could Allow Elevation of Privilege (3089952)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91096 (Microsoft Skype for Business Server and Lync Server Elevation of Privilege Vulnerability (MS15-104)).

Applying the patch MS15-097 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (85849). The entries 77613, 77614, 77615 and 77616 are pretty similar.
