The CFNetwork HTTPProtocol component in Apple iOS before 9 allows remote attackers to bypass the HSTS protection mechanism, and consequently obtain sensitive information, via a crafted URL.
The weakness was disclosed 09/16/2015 by Xiaofeng Zheng (beist) as HT205212 as confirmed advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5858 since 08/06/2015. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. The advisory points out:
A URL parsing vulnerability existed in HSTS handling. This issue was addressed through improved URL parsing.
The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370192 (Apple Mac OS X v10.11 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2015-09-30-3)).
Upgrading to version 9 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
