Mozilla Firefox up to 40 TCP Socket API navigator.mozTCPSocket.open Memory information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Mozilla Firefox up to 40 (Web Browser). Affected is the function navigator.mozTCPSocket.open of the component TCP Socket API. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability (Memory). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. CVE summarizes:

The TCP Socket API implementation in Mozilla Firefox before 41.0 mishandles array boundaries that were established with a navigator.mozTCPSocket.open method call and send method calls, which allows remote TCP servers to obtain sensitive information from process memory by reading packet data, as demonstrated by availability of this API in a Firefox OS application.

The weakness was shared 09/24/2015 by Francisco Alonso (Felix) with NowSecure (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.mozilla.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2015-4503 since 06/10/2015. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86079 (FreeBSD : mozilla -- multiple vulnerabilities (2d56c7f4-b354-428f-8f48-38150c607a05)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 168108 (OpenSuSE Security Update for MozillaFirefox (openSUSE-SU-2015:1658-1)).

Upgrading to version 41.0 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (106628) and Tenable (86079). The entries 78020, 78022, 78023 and 78025 are related to this item.
