A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Web Reference Database up to 0.9.6. This affects an unknown code block of the file install.php. The manipulation of the argument adminPassword
with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-78. install.php in Web Reference Database (aka refbase) through 0.9.6 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary commands via the adminPassword parameter, a different issue than CVE-2015-7381.
The weakness was shared 09/28/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at kb.cert.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-6008 since 08/14/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
A public exploit has been developed by Mohab Ali and been published even before and not after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. By approaching the search of inurl:install.php it is possible to find vulnerable targets with Google Hacking.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product.
