This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-2515 since 03/19/2015. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $5k-$25k at the moment (estimation calculated on 06/20/2022).

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86366 (MS15-109: Security Update for Windows Shell to Address Remote Code Execution (3096443)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91099 (Microsoft Windows Shell Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS15-109)).

Applying the patch MS15-109 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21199.
