Apache HTTP Server on Linux apachectl Files access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in Apache HTTP Server on Linux (Web Server) (affected version unknown). This affects an unknown functionality of the file apachectl. The manipulation with the input value /var/lock leads to a access control vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-264. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:

The Debian apache2ctl script in the apache2 package squeeze before 2.2.16-6+squeeze11, wheezy before 2.2.22-13, and sid before 2.2.22-13 for the Apache HTTP Server on Debian GNU/Linux does not properly create the /var/lock/apache2 lock directory, which allows local users to gain privileges via an unspecified symlink attack.

The weakness was shared 03/04/2013 by Hayawardh Vijayakumar as DSA-2637-1 as not defined advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1048 since 01/11/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.

After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at bugs.launchpad.net. It is declared as proof-of-concept. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 64995 (Debian DSA-2637-1 : apache2 - several issues), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195375 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Apache2 Vulnerabilities (USN-1765-1)).

Applying the patch 2.2.16-6+squeeze11 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at httpd.apache.org.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (82626), Tenable (64995), SecurityFocus (BID 58325†), OSVDB (90852†) and Secunia (SA52301†).
