ntpd 4.2.8 logconfig Command input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The log_config_command function in ntp_parser.y in ntpd in NTP before 4.2.7p42 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (ntpd crash) via crafted logconfig commands.

The weakness was disclosed 10/22/2015 by Miroslav Lichv as cisco-sa-20151021-ntp as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at tools.cisco.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2015-5194 since 07/01/2015. The exploitation appears to be easy. The attack can be launched remotely. The requirement for exploitation is a single authentication. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 85751 (Amazon Linux AMI : ntp (ALAS-2015-593)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157189 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for ntp (ELSA-2016-0780)).

Upgrading to version 4.2.8p4 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (107595), Tenable (85751), SecurityFocus (BID 76475†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57836†). Additional details are provided at bugzilla.redhat.com.
