A vulnerability, which was classified as very critical, has been found in Google Android up to 6.0 (Smartphone Operating System). Affected by this issue is some unknown functionality of the component libutils. The manipulation as part of a Audio File leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
libutils in Android before 5.1.1 LMY48X and 6.0 before 2015-11-01 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a crafted audio file, aka internal bug 22953624.
The weakness was shared 09/02/2015 by Daniel Micay as Nexus Security Bulletin, November 2015 as confirmed security bulletin (Google Groups). The advisory is shared for download at groups.google.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-6609 since 08/21/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 06/26/2022). It is expected to see the exploit prices for this product increasing in the near future. The advisory points out:
The affected functionality is provided as an API and there are multiple applications that allow it to be reached with remote content, most notably MMS and browser playback of media. This issue is rated as a Critical severity issue due to the possibility of remote code execution in a privileged service. The affected component has access to audio and video streams as well as access to privileges that third-party apps cannot normally access.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 30 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k.
Upgrading to version Build LMY48X or 6.0 Security Patch Level 11-01-2015 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 3 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at X-Force (107819). The entries 79009, 79008, 79007 and 79006 are related to this item.
