OpenAFS up to 1.6.14/1.7.32 Rx Acknowledgement Packet rx/rx.c information disclosure

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in OpenAFS up to 1.6.14/1.7.32 (File Transfer Software). It has been classified as problematic. This affects an unknown part of the file rx/rx.c of the component Rx Acknowledgement Packet Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a information disclosure vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-200. The product exposes sensitive information to an actor that is not explicitly authorized to have access to that information. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

rx/rx.c in OpenAFS before 1.6.15 and 1.7.x before 1.7.33 does not properly initialize the padding of a data structure when constructing an Rx acknowledgement (ACK) packet, which allows remote attackers to obtain sensitive information by (1) conducting a replay attack or (2) sniffing the network.

The weakness was shared 11/06/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared at openafs.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2015-7762 since 10/08/2015. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1592 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 86920 (Debian DLA-342-1 : openafs security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 175543 (Debian Security Update for openafs (DSA 3387-1)).

Upgrading to version 1.6.15 or 1.7.33 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (86920), SecurityFocus (BID 77407†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-57445†). The entry VDB-79090 is related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
