vBulletin up to 5.1.9 decodeArguments arguments input validation
CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.
A vulnerability was found in vBulletin up to 5.1.9 (Forum Software) and classified as critical. Affected by this issue is the function
vB_Api_Hook::decodeArguments of the file ajax/api/hook/decodeArguments. The manipulation of the argument
arguments with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
The vB_Api_Hook::decodeArguments method in vBulletin 5 Connect 5.1.2 through 5.1.9 allows remote attackers to conduct PHP object injection attacks and execute arbitrary PHP code via a crafted serialized object in the arguments parameter to ajax/api/hook/decodeArguments.
The weakness was shared 11/24/2015 (Website). The advisory is shared for download at exploit-db.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2015-7808 since 10/11/2015. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known.
A public exploit has been developed by hhjj and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 19 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k.
There is no information about possible countermeasures known. It may be suggested to replace the affected object with an alternative product. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 21922.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Exploit-DB (38629).
