A vulnerability was found in FFmpeg up to 2.6.4/2.7.2/2.8.2 (Multimedia Processing Software). It has been rated as problematic. This issue affects the function smka_decode_frame
of the file libavcodec/smacker.c of the component Channel Handler. The manipulation as part of a Smacker Data leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The smka_decode_frame function in libavcodec/smacker.c in FFmpeg before 2.6.5, 2.7.x before 2.7.3, and 2.8.x through 2.8.2 does not verify that the data size is consistent with the number of channels, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds array access) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted Smacker data.
The weakness was presented 11/26/2015 by Gynvael Coldwind (j00ru) as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.videolan.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2015-8365 since 11/26/2015. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 87178 (FreeBSD : ffmpeg -- multiple vulnerabilities (b0da85af-21a3-4c15-a137-fe9e4bc86002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196441 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Libav Vulnerabilities (USN-2944-1)).
Upgrading to version 2.6.5, 2.7.3 or 2.8.3 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.videolan.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (108351) and Tenable (87178). See 68316, 75955, 79224 and 79225 for similar entries.
